Queue Tips: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)

I actually hadn't seen "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" since it first came out on DVD many, many years ago.  I mean, not really.  It came out in theaters in 2001 so it must have come out on DVD around 2002.  We probably had our first DVD player around that time.  Just like with every other movie on disc back then, I must have watched it over and over, checked out the special features and turned on the subtitles and checked out the audio options.  It was cool not having to rewind it.  I'm pretty sure I didn't buy it, but rented it at the video store around the corner.  I was still in college at that time and never actually bought a DVD because the $20 was still too much for me.  I did buy music though.  And I must have thought if I started buying one DVD, I probably wouldn't stop.  But I digress.

In the subsequent years, the movie would be broadcast on TV and on cable, and I'm sure I must have put in on many times.  But my point about not having really watched it, is that most likely I was multi tasking.  I could have been on the computer at the same time.  I could have been channel surfing when it had commercials.

I can't remember whether my first born read the books first or watched the movie.  Either way, I don't recall paying close attention when I did put it on for him.  At that time, I did bring work home a lot, so it's possible I was distracted.  Or maybe tired and took a nap during some points.

My younger one had never watched it.  He hasn't read the books either.  He is not much into chapter books lately.  Maybe if he had the Harry Potter series, he would be, but he doesn't.  Maybe I'll check it out from the library.  Maybe his friends might be able to lend it to him.

He does know about the character.  But he doesn't know the stories.  We have a bunch of Lego sets that we have built.  But that's about the extent that he knows.

Today, his friend had a birthday party.  I didn't know what the plan was, but I just accepted the invite pretty much right away when I got it months ago.  I didn't pay close attention, but it turns out the location happened to be a church.  I wasn't sure I wouldn't have to cancel at the last minute due to hockey stuff always coming up, so I didn't really take a look at the details.

Well, as the date was coming up, the friend's mom sent a reminder and told the attendees what the deal was.  It was to be at a church, but it would be for a movie showing of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone".  I got busy as usual and didn't even get to tell Dusty about it until the day of, this morning.  Actually, I forgot to even tell him about the party until yesterday.

I thought it would be an interesting experience for him.  It's fun seeing a movie blind.  I thought about asking Rusty if he would like to come, as siblings were welcomed, but he decided to stay home instead.  I came to a quick realization once the movie started that he would have hated the experience.  It was a bunch of nine and ten year old boys talking and making noise throughout the whole movie.

I'm not sure what kind of church it was or what denomination or whatever, but apparently their building had two theaters that can exhibit movies.  Not some kind of makeshift thing, but a real cinema.  It was just a Blu-Ray being projected and not whatever format they use at professional theaters, but the quality was pretty great.  I wondered though about the legalities of exhibiting a movie and all that stuff they warn you about when you put on the DVD.

It was a fun experience for me, despite the noise.  I sat in the back by myself.  I had planned to take a nap, but I ended up watching the whole thing.  It had occurred to me then that I had not actually really watched it since it first came out.  I was a college student watching it alone in the living room some weekday morning when I didn't have class.  This time, I was in a theatre with the intended target audience.

Dusty liked it, too.  He and his group of friends were a few rows down, and in the beginning, I could see him leaning up against the chair in front of him.  From time to time, I could hear his voice yelling out with the rest of them.  The kids' reactions to the characters' situations was equally as entertaining as the movie.  They would "ooh" when someone got in trouble, for example, or they would laugh out loud when Harry had a snappy answer to Draco Malfoy.

Dusty came home excited.  He told Rusty all about it.  He asked to watch the next one.  I don't know if he knows how many there are, but he heard his friends ask for it.  I'm not sure though,  I think they kinda get a bit dark.  I am not actually a big fan of sequels.  Not sure if I remember a sequel that I thought was worth making.  But making I will watch them again just for my own curiosity.  We'll see.
